The German Shepherd Dog  (GSD) is considered one of the most prominent dog breeds in the U.S. Known for being a resourceful working dog, this dog is also known to be confident, loyal, and a family favorite. What’s not to love right?

Here are five interesting things you may want to know about German Shepherd dogs:

Name

German Shepherd dogs are just one of the few breeds that have the word “dog” in its name for the simple reason of avoiding the confusion of a shepherd from Germany and the dog breed itself. There’s been a name change in 1917 where the word “German” was dropped from its name but in 1930, the American Kennel Club decided to change it back to “German Shepherd Dog.”

Military

In the 1900s, the GSD is the main dog trained for the German military for carrying ammunition, guarding, acting as a messenger, and conducting search and rescue. American soldiers from World War 1 saw the capability of the dogs and brought them back to the United States.

Here are just some of the roles of the GSD:

  • Guard dogs – They would obediently as well as observantly man the trenches and also guarantee that allied pressures were incapable to slip up on innocent German troops.
  • Attack dogs – They would sometimes join charges and also wreak havoc throughout the trench fees.
  • Mercy dogs – They would certainly find injured soldiers as well as bring them emergency treatment.
  • Hospice dogs – They would certainly supply comfort as well as friendship to mortally wounded soldiers up until they passed.
  • Messengers – They would certainly be strapped with vests-of-sorts that enabled them to promptly carry messages along the front lines

Stars

Yes, these dogs are famous movie stars too!  Have you heard about Strongheart? It was starred by Etzel von Oeringen, a male German Shepherd who was one of the earliest canine stars of feature films. He was a former German military dog who starred in 6 movies, including “White Fang” in 1925. He even has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Strongheart paved the way for Rin-Tin-Tin, the GSD war dog that attained international fame while starring in 27 films as well as is credited with conserving the then-struggling Detector Bros.

Service Dogs

Though built for strength and attacks, these dogs are also well-known as service pets. Apollo is the very first German Shepherd Dog to react to Ground Zero on 9/11. Another GSD, Buddy, also became the very first seeing eye pet dog to Morris Frank in 1928. The institution in Switzerland run by American Dorothy Harrison Eustis was educating hardworking, seeing-eye pets. Eustis worked hard to develop The Seeing Eye, an institution food catering to educate more seeing-eye canines. In 1956, due to Frank’s uncomplicated marketing, every state in the U.S. passed a regulation permitting overview pet dogs to accompany their blind friends in public spaces.
