Garden design is probably the hardest thing to learn if you are not that good at landscapes, as well as the most satisfying. It’s a good thing that there are a number of resources that will help you through this process, starting with doing the groundwork before you start planning and designing. This article discusses some tools and resources that you can use to make your design a success.
Just like anything else in life, if you don’t know what you are doing, you can never get it done right. This applies to garden design as well. The most important tool is the knowledge of how plants grow, what needs to be cared for, and the best way to do it all.
Gardening is not something that you should do once a year. Rather, you should try to be active in your garden once a week to three times a week. This will give you the chance to walk around the garden, take some pictures, listen to the sounds of nature, and basically experience it like you wouldn’t ordinarily experience it.
If you have kids or pets, it is a good idea to organize a few times of the year when they can play and spend time in the garden. Depending on your pet, one may not be appropriate while the other is. Again, the key is to try and enjoy the experience and to let them have some fun. Otherwise, your garden will end up looking like a crowded potting shed.
You should always make sure that your plants have plenty of sunlight, too much of which could kill them. Also, you can opt to water your plants, but then you have to get a good pump to help that happen. Watering does not have to be done every day or even every week. It depends on the weather, and how much you want to control your plants.
It’s easy to forget that certain plants need lots of sunlight. For example, cacti require it, as do many others. Weeds don’t always need too much light, as long as they get the correct nutrients. For example, things like lawn grasses and some types of flowers don’t need as much water as you might think. In fact, they only need enough water when they are dormant during the summer months.
Certain types of plants, such as asparagus, need shade. Asparagus will grow very well in a sunny spot during the springtime, but in the summer they will grow so well they can overshadow your more colorful plants. If you live in an area where it is hot all the time, and the shade is not too intense, asparagus will thrive nicely. In the shade, however, you can water it frequently, and it will still bloom wonderfully.
You will notice that flowering plants require watering. Their roots need to be kept watered so that they can continue to reproduce. There are a number of flower species that do this, including daffodils, roses, and zinnias. You will also find that certain shrubs and trees need to be watered periodically, especially if the weather is hot.
Plants that require too much water will be very thirsty. These include aloe vera, which is an amazing plant that gets very little sunlight and is known for its wonderful water-absorbing ability. This plant can survive without the sun, so you don’t have to worry about it drying out.
Your plants will need fertilizer, as well. The best way to fertilize is with organic material such as compost. Organic materials such as manure and leafy greens tend to be very rich in nutrients and make great additions to your garden.
These are just a few of the garden design ideas you can use to make your design the best it can be. The more tools and resources you have at your disposal, the better off you will be, and the faster you will be able to enjoy your garden.
